LGBT Rights

Civil Rights

I have an extensive record of supporting and advocating for LGBT rights.  As one of the original members of the Pride of Philadelphia Election Committee (POPEC) and Liberty City Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club, I am also the co-chair of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered Equality Caucus in the General Assembly whose mission is to promote equality regardless of sexual orientation.

I consistently oppose legislation that would inhibit the liberties of the LGBT community, while actively working on proposals to expand LGBT rights.  I have long been known for protesting anti-gay remarks made on the House floor or otherwise.

I support marriage and family equality for LGBT citizens and want to add domestic partners to the list of those exempt from paying inheritance taxes when their partner passes away. I respect all families.

I strongly believe we must amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act (P.L.744, No.222) to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations.  As the Democratic Chair of the State Government Committee, I held hearings across the state on anti-discrimination legislation; the first positive hearings to ever be held on LGBT issues in the history of the PA General Assembly.  In the following session when the bill ran again, the State Government Committee voted to move this legislation to the House floor for a vote; the first time in Pennsylvania’s history for a pro-gay rights bill to ever make it out of committee.
