HARRISBURG, Jan. 18 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., announced that applications for the 2008-09 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship Program are being accepted until April 1.
The program is open to high school seniors planning to attend any Pennsylvania college, university or career school. Administered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, the program is not affiliated with any political party and is renewable for up to four years of college. Two scholarships are awarded per year in an amount equal to the cost of one semester at a State System of Higher Education school, which is approximately $2,500.
Scholarship applicants will be judged based on an essay, their grades, community service, financial need and extracurricular activities. This year's essay topic is President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Students should discuss how the address was influential by articulating the purpose and promise of the American people. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average.
The foundation will evaluate all applications and may choose to interview the finalists. Applicants will be notified after May 30 with selection results.
Recipients may also be eligible to receive matching funds from Savings and Growth for Education Scholars Inc, and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency's PATH Program based on financial need.
The House Scholarship program is funded by private, tax-deductible donations, including gifts from former and current House members, as well as proceeds from House-sponsored events.
