HARRISBURG, Sept. 28 – There are approximately 21.5 million people who suffer from a mood disorder in the United States each year. And, if left untreated, these disorders can interfere with their lives, and even contribute to their death.
"Everyone can benefit from learning more about mental wellness and the signs of depression and warning signs of suicide," state Rep. Babette Josephs said. "It's important to know that there are people and places that can help if you are depressed or think someone you know is depressed."
Josephs said that Oct. 11 is National Depression Screening Day. It's a day when anyone can anonymously receive a free depression screening at certain locations throughout the country.
In the Philadelphia area, the Friends Hospital, Scattergood Building Auditorium, 4641 Roosevelt Blvd., is offering free screenings on National Depression Screening Day. Those interested should call the hospital at 215-831-7803 for screening times.
Those who screen positive for depression can be referred to local professionals for diagnosis and treatment.
