PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 3 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., said summer is the perfect opportunity to be outdoors in the sunshine, but sun exposure is dangerous and everyone should take steps to protect themselves.
"Everyone likes to spend time outside in the summer but it's important to take precautions to protect yourself from the sun," Josephs said. "This can prevent skin cancer and premature aging."
Josephs suggested these tips for sun safety:
· Wear hats with broad rims, shirts with long sleeves and tightly woven clothing.
· Limit the time you are in the sun -- especially in the middle of the day when UV light is highest.
· Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside.
· Apply sunscreen generously.
· Reapply generously.
· Use sunscreen even on hazy or partly cloudy days.
· Wear sunglasses.
"Remember, taking precautions to protect yourself from the sun is an everyday thing, it's not just for vacations," she said.
