Josephs announces PHEAA science and technology scholarships

HARRISBURG, June 4 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., announced today that the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency has two scholarship programs available to science and technology students in Pennsylvania.

The scholarships are offered as part of the New Economy Technology Scholarship program. Annually, the SciTech Scholarship gives students up to $3,000, and the Technology Scholarship awards students funding up to $1,000.

The scholarships are only available to Pennsylvania residents, and recipients must agree to work full time in their field in Pennsylvania after graduation. They must work in the state for one year for each year that they receive scholarship funds.

"While it's very important for us to train the next generation of scientists, it's also equally important that we keep those young scientists in Pennsylvania where they can contribute to the state's economy," Josephs said.

The deadline for first-time applicants is Dec. 31. Students who have received NETS scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year only need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by Sept. 30 to be considered for a scholarship for the upcoming year.

Josephs said that since the NETS scholarships are awarded on a first-come basis, students should apply as soon as possible.

SciTech Scholarships are awarded to students who are pursuing a science or technology degree and are enrolled full time at a Pennsylvania college or university. Eligible students can receive the scholarship for a maximum of three years, beginning with their sophomore year. Recipients must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

Technology Scholarships are awarded to Pennsylvania high school graduates who attend a college or technical institute in Pennsylvania but do not pursue a four-year degree. Students can receive this scholarship for a maximum of two years and must also maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

For more information or to request an application for the scholarships, contact one of Josephs' constituent service offices at 215-893-1515, or 215-952-3376.

Applications are also available by calling PHEAA at 1-800-692-7392 or visiting PHEAA's Web site at www.pheaa.org.
