HARRISBURG, May 23 -- A resolution introduced by state Rep. Babette Josephs that seeks to help free three Israeli soldiers held captive by Hezbollah has been reported out of committee and sent to the full House for consideration.
On June 26, 2006, three Israeli Defense Force soldiers were kidnapped in northern Israel by the military Islamic group Hezbollah. The group has refused to return the Israeli soldiers or acknowledge their capture in violation of long-accepted international agreements.
"This is in clear violation of international law," Josephs said. "Neither the families of these three men nor the International Red Cross have been able to contact them to make sure they're OK, or even find out if they're still alive. My resolution would ask the United Nations to take action to help get these Israeli soldiers released."
If the resolution (H.R. 135) is approved by the House, a copy would be sent to the United Nations secretary-general and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives would add its voice to those of political leaders in Israel and the United States, and numerous Jewish organizations, in calling for information on the soldiers' condition and their release.
The bill was reported out of the House Intergovernmental Affairs Committee earlier today.
